How to Get Professional Footage

There are some key elements to any video production that can set them apart as professional footage.

Sound
Record the best possible sound.  Always capture sound with an external mic.  The mic on-board your DSLR will record lens focusing and moving the camera, so it should never be used.

Focus
Ensure your focus is sharp.  Soft (out of focus) footage often cannot be used unless it does not show a person's face.  Use the zoom button on your DSLR to check critical focus.

Exposure
Before pressing record, verify that the exposure is capturing your subject properly and with adequate light.

Planning
Plan your shots before pressing record.  With enough planning you can make a low-budget production appear to have been made with specialty equipment or extra crew members.

Know Your Equipment
Knowing the capabilities and limitations of your equipment will help you take your production to new levels.  Almost every DSLR with video since 2010 can record slow-motion footage.
